Greece: a photogenic and of rugged beauty with deep blue skies and dark blue seas; a land of many beaches and many mountains; and finally a land of the remains of multiple civilizations extending from the Second Millennium BCE to the present. Most visitors to Greece concentrate on the ruins of Classical Greece in Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Coriinth and, now, Nemea.These are some of the most photographed archaeoligical sites in Europe. But beyond them there are the spectacular ruins of Mycenae, Tiryns, and Pylos; the Byzantine cities of Mistra and Yeraki; the many Byzantine churches spread throughout the land, but especially those of Mani, Thessaloniki, Athens, and Meteora, all of which provide the visitor with wonderful photographic opportunities. Meteora, especially has provided some of the most spectacular images of Greece. There are few remains of Turkish rule, but some may be found in Ioannina-- the minarets there with the lake are indelible images--  and Thessaloniki, both important Ottoman cities. Modern Greece is a busy, active country with many museums (as the Benaki and National Folkloric Museum Athens), many lovely places to relax including beaches, boat trips around the islands and mainland, and hiking in the mountains or countryside. The opportunities to photograph these abound; the images of the islands are especially well known. The Greek islands are justly famous for their stark and powerful beauty, the marvelous swimming to be found there, and in some cases their sights (Samos, Santorini and Delos come to mind). To travel in Greece is to step back to many bygone times and yet enjoy the pleasures of the modern world. The country is now criss-crossed by a good road system, and though many archaeological sites are still difficult of access, they are becoming fewer and fewer-- a more pleasurable to photograph. In Northern Greece the weather can be harsh. Thessaloniki is the principal city; but the beauties of the country remain much the same. The charming harbor of Kavalla, a photographer's dream, is the point of departure for Thasos, one of the loveliest of the larger Greek islands. By far the largest Greek island is Crete which has a complicated history. In the center of Heraklion there is the Morisini fountain, a bit of late Italian Renaissance in the midst of the modern town and the ruins of Knossos, just outside Heraklion-- an image hard to erase once seen. Crete is an expedition of its own; the interior remains wild and mostly inaccessible to most visitors. Its physical beauty is as depicted in the images of the island  aknowledged by all. Last but hardly least are the Ionian islands along the west coast of Greece, which have their own distinctive history under the Venetians, Turks, French and English, the last of which gave them to Greece in the mid-19th century.
